Need some help with choosing a good watermelon? Marjorie recently said that she and Molly stood at the watermelon bin and laughed because they were tapping, thumping, scratching and sniffing all the melons (please no comments regarding melon touching, this is a family blog) but didn't have a clue which indications were the right ones. Here are a few of the things that you look for when digging through the watermelon bin at our local market:
1. Press your fingers and thumbs into the skin from all angles. A good watermelon should be hard all around.
2. Give it a few taps with your knuckles or the pads of your fingers. A winning watermelon will typically have a slight hollow sound upon tapping.
3. Look for mean green. Dark shades of green typically indicate an optimal combination of sun and water while the watermelon was growing.

And the million dollar question is??? Is the picture above a watermelon?? It's where all the seeds were spit last year at my parents pool, but is it really a watermelon??

Looks like a pumpkin to me!
I wondered if it was a pumpkin, too. Time will tell!!
That's hilarious if it is a watermelon. Or even a pumpkin for that matter. Poolside. Very nice!
Whether Pumpkin or Watermelon, it's fun to watch. Mom
